Vocal lessons

Jenny (MMus, PG Dip, ISM) is an experienced vocal teacher specialising in opera and classical singing. She offers one-to-one lessons, leads vocal workshops, and leads SEND choirs. In addition to her individual teaching, she is the vocal coach for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir.

Jenny runs two private studios, one in Salford, Greater Manchester, and a monthly studio in Central Liverpool, where she teaches a wide range of pupils of all ages and abilities, from beginners to elite singers. Her focus is to develop a healthy vocal technique that can be applied to any genre.  She is an ISM-registered private teacher with a full DBS check.

What to expect

In her welcoming studio, Jenny listens to her students to understand their aims and goals for singing. Her students work on a wide range of objectives, whether to prepare for performances, work towards music grades, prepare for music college, gain confidence, or just have fun.

Technique is a fundamental focus in all lessons, working on warm-ups based on the old Italian School, using straw phonation, improvising posture, and much more. Jenny uses clear, simple language when introducing these techniques, making her students fully understand how the vocal technique works. She also makes sure her students understand how to take care of their voice, explaining the importance of hydration, rest, and how to use the speaking voice.  Jenny carefully selects repertoire to work on that is suitable for her pupil’s current technique, but also reflects their genre tastes and style.

Jenny has a 100% pass rate across all boards for students wanting to take music exams, with students frequently achieving distinction.  She is experienced with many exam boards, including ABRSM, MTB, LCM, and Trinity, as she believes every student is different with different needs and goals. She is also adaptable to pupils with SEND and neurodiversity, with knowledge of various learning styles, and most importantly, a calm and patient manner, being able to adapt lessons to the pupil’s needs.

As well as vocal training, Jenny believes in developing pupils’ full musicianship, ensuring that aural and music theory knowledge is incorporated into every lesson. Jenny encourages her students to perform regularly and join ensembles and choirs to gain extra musicianship skills and enjoy the social and mental health benefits of group singing. She has pupils in both the Halle Children’s Chorus and Youth Choir.

“My daughter has been attending singing lessons with Jenny since 2021 and has confidently advanced under her guidance and tuition. I find Jenny’s approach to lessons fun and inclusive, adapting the lesson around the person to get the best results.

My daughter finds the lessons not only enjoyable but has commented on how she appreciates the cooperative approach to learning.”
