Vocal lessons

Jenny (MMus, PG Dip, ISM) is an experienced vocal teacher specializing in opera and classical singing. Jenny offers one-to-one lessons, leads vocal workshops, and leads SEND choirs.  She is passionate about vocal health and technique as a certified Vocal First Aider. Her focus is to develop a healthy vocal technique that can be applied to any genre, including musical theatre, pop, jazz, and rock.  Jenny has pupils of all ages and abilities, from children to adults and beginners to elite singers. She has her private studio and teaches for Music and Performing Arts Salford (MAPAS), which provides music tuition for schools across Salford in Greater Manchester. She is an ISM-registered private teacher with a full DBS check.

What to expect

In her welcoming studio, Jenny listens to her students to understand their aims and goals for singing. Her students work on a wide range of objectives,  whether to prepare for performances,  work towards music grades, prepare for music college, gain confidence, or just have fun.

Technique is a fundamental focus in all lessons, working on warm-ups based on the old Italian School, using  straw phonation, improvising posture, and much more. Jenny uses clear, simple language when introducing these techniques, making her students fully understand how the vocal technique works. She also makes sure her students understand how to take care of their voice, explaining the importance of hydration, rest, and how to use the speaking voice.  Jenny carefully selects repertoire to work on that is suitable for her pupil’s current technique but also reflects their genre tastes and style.

Jenny has a 100% pass rate across all boards for students wanting to take music exams, with students frequently achieving distinction.  She is experienced  with many exam boards, including ABRSM, MTB, LCM, and Trinity, as she believes every student is different with different needs and goals.

As well as vocal training, Jenny believes in developing pupils’ full musicianship, ensuring that aural and music theory knowledge is incorporated into every lesson. Jenny encourages her students to perform regularly and join ensembles and choirs to gain extra musicianship skills, and enjoy the social and mental health benefits of group singing. She has pupils in both the Halle Children’s Chorus and Youth Choir.

“My daughter has been attending singing lessons with Jenny since 2021 and has confidently advanced under her guidance and tuition. I find Jenny’s approach to lessons fun and inclusive, adapting the lesson around the person to get the best results.

My daughter finds the lessons not only enjoyable but has commented on how she appreciates the cooperative approach to learning.”

EYFS workshops

Jenny delivers music workshops for children aged 0-5 using the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Workshops introduce pitch, rhythm, and musicianship skills using familiar nursery rhymes. The workshops use colourful props and games to keep young children and their carers interested and engaged in the session.

Jenny is currently delivering Tune-in to talking workshops through MAPAS to primary schools in Salford, Greater Manchester, using music and singing to promote and encourage children’s speech development.

School workshops

Jenny has developed her vocal leadership when mentored by Shirley Court MBE with the Halle Vocal Tutor and Greater Manchester Music Hub. As an experienced vocal educator, Jenny provides schools across the North West with singing assemblies and has been a regular vocal lead for MAPAS’s Big Sings, conducting massed choirs.

Jenny has a fun and animated approach to group singing, while giving clear instructions and simple vocal techniques to improve mass singing. She selects fun and suitable repertoire for the age group, yet challenges the group to grow in musicality and confidence.

Jenny also works with adult groups, often to help improve their confidence and vocal technique.  She has been a vocal coach for the Blackburn Music Society, assisting the choir in work on their vocal technique individually and as a group.
